On July 16, Victoria Bartlett, a spokesperson for the Mayor’s Tulsa Million Miles initiative was joined by Shane Hamman, an Olympian in weightlifting for Olympic Day at the Saint Francis HealthZone. Shane competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and was an NBC announcer for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Mrs. Bartlett encouraged the HealthZone summer day camp kids to stay fit and healthy for life. Shane Hamman, known as “The Strongest Weightlifter in American History,” also led the group in a couple of exercises with weights. Shane broke 27 American Records during his career and also holds the World Record in the squat at 1,008 pounds. He received gold medals at the 1994 and 1995 World Championships.
“Mayor Bartlett and I support healthy and fit lifestyles and are working to improve the overall health and fitness of the city. Eating healthy, nutritious foods and exercising every day are essential for all of us to live strong and healthy lives. It’s exciting to have Shane Hamman with us today – he’s a great role model for children and is proof that you can accomplish your dreams and goals when you persevere,” said Victoria Bartlett.
Shane Hamman said, “Being a part of the Olympics during the 2000 and 2004 Olympics was an extraordinary experience. I went to the games ready to compete, but when I arrived there it was way bigger than I expected – so I had to keep my focus and do my best. The best part of my Olympic experience was that I was able to accomplish my life-long dream.”
Olympic Day is a worldwide commemoration of Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s June 23, 1894 convening of the first International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris, and the founding of the Modern Olympic Games.
